Unfortunately, most people who have periodontal disease either haven’t been diagnosed or do not actively seek treatment. The result of untreated periodontal disease is tooth loss and often severe systemic health issues.

Don’t let your Gum Disease go unnoticed !

What are the causes of gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection caused when plaque and calculus build up along the gumline. Both plaque and calculus are filled with bacteria. Without proper oral hygiene, the bacteria in plaque and calculus slowly eat away and damage your teeth, gums, and jaw bone.

This is why brushing, flossing, and regular visits to your dentist are so important! These habits break up and remove plaque and calculus, keeping bacteria at bay and protecting your gums, teeth, and bone.

It’s important to note that some people are genetically predisposed to periodontal disease. It can also be caused by certain medications or health issues. You might do everything right and still end up with periodontal disease — not fair, right?

No matter the cause, gum disease should never be left untreated.

More Questions? We can help.
What does gum disease look like?
The most obvious visual signs of gum disease are bright red, swollen gums, and bleeding when you brush or floss. Other visual cues include teeth that start to look longer (called gum recession) and small black triangles between your teeth.
Does gum disease hurt?
Because periodontal disease causes inflammation, it can be painful. You may notice your gums feel tender to the touch or achy no matter what you’re doing.
Can salt water rinse cure a gum infection?
Although not an end-all solution, a saltwater rinse is a good way to soothe irritated gums. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. of lukewarm water and swish gently before spitting out.
